Dignity in Motion: The Journey of Sukhdev Vasanth Tamchekar
In 2022-23, 200 lives across 5 states in India, including Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar were supported with NeoMotion wheelchairs for their education and livelihood under the CSR initiative by Bajaj General Insurance.
Sukhdev, a resident of Pune, Maharashtra, was a government employee with the PWD Electric Department, lived a steady life with his mother, wife, and two children. On 7 August 2022, his life changed in an instant when he slipped and fell from the second floor of his home while reading the newspaper. The accident resulted in a spinal cord injury that left him bedridden for six months. During this period, he underwent intensive bed rest and physiotherapy before gradually regaining the ability to sit.
When he returned home, he relied on a standard surgical wheelchair. However, its size and design made everyday movement extremely difficult. Navigating his home, stepping outside, or even commuting short distances caused him physical strain, particularly shoulder pain, and deep frustration. His world had become smaller, constrained by a device that did not meet his needs.
After a year, his journey took a turn when the New Motion team, in partnership with Bajaj Allianz General Insurance and Round Table India, reached out to assess his needs. They took precise measurements and recommended the NeoBolt, a customized mobility device suited to his condition and lifestyle. A few months later, he was invited to a handover event, where beneficiaries were trained on how to use their new wheelchairs effectively.
The moment Sukhdev drove the NeoBolt home for the first time was deeply emotional. As he navigated the roads, passersby looked on in curiosity and admiration. When he reached his neighborhood, people gathered around to see his new “vehicle.” In his own words, he felt as though he had “grown wings” – a powerful metaphor for the freedom he had regained. Practically, the device also helped him save around ₹9,000 per month, reducing his reliance on paid transport and assistance.
Sixteen months after his accident, Sukhdev returned to work, commuting independently on the NeoBolt and continuing to use it daily. Beyond work, the device opened up the world to him again: he began attending weddings, visiting friends, moving around freely, and completing tasks on his own without depending on others. Mobility restored not just movement, but dignity, confidence, and participation in social life.
His impact extended beyond himself. Every day, two or three people ask him about the NeoBolt, and he actively shares his experience, effectively becoming a community advocate for assistive technology. His story demonstrates how access to the right mobility solution can create ripple effects – inspiring others and raising awareness about inclusive support.
For his family, the change has been equally profound. His wife, Kalpana, reflects on the hardships they faced after the accident, noting how far he has come because of New Motion’s support. His father also recalls their struggles and expresses gratitude for how his son has regained independence and purpose.
Sukhdev’s journey underscores a crucial insight: disability does not diminish a person’s right to education, livelihood, or dignity. With the right support, delivered through thoughtful partnerships between Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, Round Table India, and New Motion, lives can be rebuilt, independence restored, and human potential unlocked.
